CareNet DuPage specializes in information on early pregnancy for teenagers. We know that everyone’s situation is unique, and we offer customized services to meet your needs. Read on to learn more.
Who can receive teenage pregnancy services?
CareNet DuPage is a nonprofit organization, providing services for women who have just found out that they are pregnant, or who need to find out whether they are pregnant. Here at CareNet DuPage, we offer many teenage pregnancy services and resources, as well as care for women of all ages and in all walks of life. There are no residency requirements and no insurance information is needed. All services are free and completely confidential.
Will anyone know that I visited CareNet DuPage?
Many teens come to us worried about confidentiality. Here at CareNet DuPage, we take pride in providing our services in a safe and confidential environment. Many teens love coming to CareNet DuPage because you can take advantage of talking to someone outside of your friends and family, where you can be objectively listened to, without feeling judged. This creates an environment where it is easy to open up and share your thoughts and feelings. Regardless of client age, we do not notify parents/guardians of anything to do with pregnancy appointments.
What services does CareNet DuPage offer for teens?
CareNet DuPage provides first-step information about pregnancy—so a test to confirm if you really are pregnant, and information about the teenage pregnancy options that are available (parenting, abortion, and adoption). We can also offer a limited ultrasound to provide information about the age of the pregnancy and its viability (the likelihood of the pregnancy continuing). Meeting with one of our knowledgeable and compassionate pregnancy consultants, you will have the chance to safely ask any questions you might have.
How is the CareNet DuPage test different from my home pregnancy test?
While home pregnancy tests are generally accurate, it is possible for them to be confusing or wrong. CareNet DuPage offers medical-grade tests during a confidential pregnancy consultation. Our pregnancy consultants will ask you a few questions about your history (your menstrual cycle, birth control history, results of home tests, symptoms, etc.) in order to give you the best information. Once the test is completed the consultant can talk with you regarding the results and help you consider options that are relevant to your situation.
What happens next if the test is positive?
Once a positive pregnancy test is obtained, CareNet DuPage may offer you a free ultrasound. These are done when you are at least 6 weeks along based off your last menstrual period. This service is very important. An ultrasound can provide you with the information you may need to determine if the pregnancy is likely to continue (or miscarry naturally) and that the pregnancy itself is located within the uterus. It may also tell you how far along you are in the pregnancy.
What if I want to get an abortion?
In Illinois, even if you are a minor, you can make medical decisions for yourself and the pregnancy. If you are 17 or younger, Illinois law requires you to notify an adult family member or legal guardian about the abortion. They do not have to give permission or consent. As part of our pregnancy consultation services, you can learn about the kinds of abortion procedures and what to expect during and after a procedure.
What if I want to parent or make an adoption plan?
Teens who plan to continue their pregnancies often find it helpful to meet with a pregnancy consultant to learn more about parenting, adoption, and the resources that can support them through those choices. Having an expert in your corner helps with navigating some of the concerns that are more common with teens, such as finishing school, telling parents, and figuring out issues with a boyfriend/possible father.
What about talking to my parents?
You are the expert on your parents and your relationship with them. Our pregnancy consultants have a bigger-picture perspective from working with dozens of teens and families over the years. We are happy to work with you to create the best plan for your unique family situation and provide whatever kind of support you think would be helpful. In general, we find that many parents are reassured when they hear that you’ve been taking responsible steps like visiting a pregnancy center. Their main concern is often that you will be well, and it can help to learn that you have information on resources like health insurance options, financial services, OB/GYN doctors in the area, and substance abuse help.
